April 2023

In April, I started my first races of the season, which were the British Triathlon Performance Assessments, the Edge Hill Sprint Triathlon, and the World Junior Duathlon Championships.

Performance Assessments went well on the swim, where I managed a time of 9:12 in the pool at Nottingham University on the Saturday, and on the Sunday was a Bike-Run race, with the start based off the swim times from the previous day. I managed to get into a pack and started working together, but unfortunately the athlete in front of me lost the wheel after I had pulled a turn and I couldn't bridge the gap back onto the pack.

I then got caught by the second bike pack, which was a lot bigger and stayed in this until T2.

I didn't have many expectations for the run, as I had been building back run fitness from injury, but my run was poorer than expected, with cramps holding me up a lot.

I managed to finish in 22nd place, but was overall happy with my race as I wasn't expecting a good run.

In the Edge Hill Sprint Triathlon, I had a bit more run fitness, however only ran the first 2.5k hard off the bike.

I managed to swim 4:36 for the 400m swim, and my bike was solid holding good power. I also managed to run well off the bike and felt strong.

Next was the World Junior Duathlon Championships, in Santa Eulària, Ibiza. I knew that it was going to be a hard race, as it was very hot and my first duathlon race in a long time.

When it came to my race, the temperature was 27.1°C, which made for an especially hard first run. The race was taken out hard, and the field was strung out a lot by T1.

As the bike went on, I found myself in a pack of 4, working well together.

The second run was difficult coming off the bike, however I managed to find my legs around 1.5km into the run, finishing strong for 7th place.

It was a great experience for my first international race, and I am looking forward to the next one.
